Why is God such a big problem to America?

I have such a problem understanding why people are trying to remove the name of God from everything such as our pledge and our currency. I don't really see how this is infringing on someones freedom of Religion. It's not as if you have to recognizes these phrases. And why is it "shoving Religion down peoples throats" to ask for just one measly paragraph in our Science textbooks about Intellegant Design? I mean, our country as well as many others are founded on and by Christian principals and the majority is religous, so I'm told so why is God such a taboo to people?
