What will happen to NATO?

Close to 20% of NATO countries are applying for financial aid through the IMF. Most of the countries are former soviet block countries or countries that have a close proximity to Russia. So, since these countries are economically unstable, and were relatively politically volatile before the financial crisis, what will happen to European politics and the trans-atlantic alliance? How will the ethnic tensions in this region be effected or impacted by the financial crisis?
